January 2016

January 2016

Welcome to 2016!

2015 was a great year for Chestnut Hill College and for the Connections newsletter, as it wrapped up its first full year of being published monthly. To honor that milestone and to thank all of you for your readership and support, we would like to take you back down memory lane to the year that was, by sharing your favorite stories from 2015.

We hope you enjoy this “year-in-review” and hope you are looking forward to all of the exciting things to come for Connections in 2016. Happy New Year!

The residence halls re-open on Sunday, January 17 at noon.

Mark the calendar for other residence hall closings: Friday, February 26 at 6 p.m. for Spring Break and March 23 at 6 p.m. for Easter Break.

The housing deposit process for 2015-2016 housing will begin in March. Students who wish to live on campus next year need to make a $100 non-refundable deposit during Deposit Days (March 7-26). Details are available to students on the portal.

Luce scholarship winners

Brittany Afflerbach, Meghan Catherine Guagenti and Megan Malvoisin, all first-year students, each received a $5,000 award through the Clare Boothe Luce Program of The Henry Luce Foundation. The program supports women in the physical science and engineering fields, in which women are historically underrepresented.

retirement awards

In April, the Chestnut Hill College community honored faculty and staff who were receiving awards for 10 or more years of service at CHC’s annual Retirement and Service Awards Celebration.

scholarship gala

The Rotunda and Sorgenti Arena were transformed for one magical night in May as 340 friends of Chestnut Hill College celebrated its 90th anniversary as part of the annual Scholarship Gala. This year, 32 alumni also were honored as they were inducted into the Libris Society.

graduation

May 9, the day of CHC’s 88th Commencement, dawned overcast and chilly. For a short time during the ceremony, heavy rain fell, leaving rivulets running around the feet of those in attendance. And yet, by the time all 531 had received their diplomas, the sun was out, shining on the happiness below.

Cristo Rey agreement

Chestnut Hill College recently announced a partnership with Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School that offers two, $20,000 annual scholarships to first-year students entering CHC from Cristo Rey Philadelphia. The first scholarships will be awarded in the fall 2016 semester.

WHYY Radio Times

When WHYY’s Radio Times went on the road in June, host Marty Moss-Coane interviewed Steve Inskeep, co-host of NPR’s Morning Edition, at SugarLoaf for a live broadcast of the show. This is just one of the many recent events Sugarloaf has hosted to great success.

convocation

Following move-in day, students were welcomed to the College in front of their peers, faculty, staff and administrators, during Fall Convocation on August 21.

Pope Francis

I’ve been a fan of Pope Francis since the day he was elected; seeing him emerge on the balcony in St. Peter’s Square and ask for prayers struck my heart as a deeply humble and holy act.  Following his actions and words over the years, I didn’t think I could like the Pope any more than I already did. Then Pope Francis came to Philadelphia.

CHC at the Phillies

The second annual CHC Night at the Phillies on August 29 was a great success, with more than 750 Griffins cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies as they hosted the San Diego Padres, ultimately winning 4 – 3.

Sr. Carol, Big Griff

One year after announcing the addition of sprint football as the College’s newest athletic offering, the team of coaches and players, alongside a supportive College community, has been preparing for its first-ever home football game, against Princeton University on September 19.

Logue Library

Believe it or not, Logue Library has been around since the 1960-61 academic year, making it more than a half-century old.

student life symposium

After months of planning, Chestnut Hill College hosted its first annual Student Life Symposium at Sugarloaf in October with the theme of Collaborative Conversations.

Cristina on the bus

Did you know that Cristina Diaz ’15, former senior class president and captain of the quidditch team for three years, spent much of the fall as the “face” of Chestnut Hill College?

Coming Events

A great place to keep track of all campus events, activities and public lectures at the College is through our community-wide calendar found at www.chc.edu/calendar.
